new work

June 11th 2006 | Handel House Museum
A keyboard fugue by Handel arranged for string quartet by Mozart and completed by Mark accompanied by a new work (250th anniversary Mozart’s Birth)

when the sun begins to fling
June 21st 2007 | Spitalfields Festival, London
Commissioned for CoMA. It takes as its starting point the oratorio L'Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato by Handel. The oratorio is a setting of two poems by Milton. In the first poem Milton evokes the delights of the country and the excitement of the city in order to banish melancholic feelings whilst the second poem seeks to drive out 'vain, deluding joys' by welcoming quiet contemplation and the pleasures of the mind. The piece draws on one particular section of recitative from Handel’s oratorio, And when the Sun begins to fling, from which all of the harmonic and rhythmic material is derived.

Where the Eye can see
June 2008 | Handel House Museum
The Burney Players - Handel House's Ensemble-in-Residence - will premiere John's first commission for the museum. The piece - Where the Eye can see - is based on an aria which Handel wrote to insert into the 1751 performance of Esther (not 1732, as asserted in the Handel House's recent newsletter - apologies). The piece is scored for soprano, violin, cello, recorders and harpsichord.

Salve Regina
July 2008 | The chapel of St Catharine's College, Cambridge
The Elysian Singers give the premiere of John's second commission from Handel House Museum: Salve Regina which was inspired by Handel’s Esther. The piece was dedicated to the memory of a friend of John’s Kathy Bradley (1947-2001).
